I decided to do something a little different tonight. I was testing out some new screen-capture software and decided to make a quick video. This is what I ended up with... I had no idea what I was going to draw to start off with and just start with a rough sketch as you can see in the video. The above image is the end result. Now that I am happy with the new software I plan on making more videos showing me doing different bits of game art etc. I hope you enjoy it!

I didnt win... apparently I should have picked 1 character and focused on him- they only accept one "Pile up" piece per year- and well I was one of many... It was fun though. I would loved to have seen this printed. Maybe next year :P

SPLICE contest

Yes, I know this is ugly and scary! It is supposed to be :) I entered a contest on DeviantArt. The contest was run by the director of the movie Splice which is about genetically altered animals. The contest was to splice a few animals together, or to mix a human in there- so I came up with this concept. The movie is a scary rated R film- so I tried to make the beast scary as well. I threw pieces of a Lion, Grizzly Bear, Bison, Scorpion, Zebra, and yes- Human together to make this UN-lovable mutant Spliced creature. Hope it doesn't give you nightmares!

Amber, my Japanese friend, bought me a Gundam model on one of her trips to Japan. I leisurely pieced the thing together while watching tv or something else less involved. I used to play with legos as a kid and it brought back some memories. I finally pieced it all together and brought it into work to sit on my desk. A wee-bit nerdy but it was actually a lot of fun. I think if I ever did another one I would like to paint it as I put it together- we will see if I ever get my hands on another kit.

Achoo T-shirt design

I submitted my first design to DesignByHumans.com last week and its been approved to go on the site for voting. If it gets enough votes and sparks enough interest it will be run as a t-shirt and open to be purchased. I will not be upset or disapointed if it does not make it through and win as it is my first submission and it is not an incredible design, just a fun concept. Chewy Tomato gang

This is a drawing i did of our small group that are working on getting a studio set up. I am the one on the far right. I drew my body first and am now unhappy as I look back as my arms are much shorter and stubby looking than the other 3... but oh well ;) So far all goes well with Chewy Tomato and I hope it is a fun project and decent source of some side-income. We want to focus on doing creative marketing and illustration campaigns (but will do other design projects in the process )

Ninja doodle / Daily Blog rant

Here is a quick photoshop doodle I was playing with and lost interest in. I have been pretty busy building up my daily-doodle blog site in the free time that I have. I am trying to make it fun and generate some sort of a fan base for it. Recommend it to your friends! I am excited about it and I plan on keeping up with it and posting every day. I love the idea of a daily drawing. I think it will help me stay motivated and stay drawing and thinking and trying new things. It will be more like a digital art journal or sketch pad, and I presume that as months pass I will change styles and try new things. Right now im kind of in this simplistic cutesy mood where I draw this simple characters and make them cute and use harmonic color combinations to give it good eye appeal. I think it is fun, even though my friends are asking me if I am in the closet because of it! But back to todays post- here is the ninja I did. It started out with a simple sketch that I started to render for a little more Photoshop practice. I played with it for an hour or so and went to bed. Now I look at it and think its cool but I would rather work on other things or more important things ( like paying jobs ) than go back and finish it. And so here it is- and off to the archives for the poor unfinished PSD file...

Imaginary Friend

This is my nephew Braxton. I got this idea to do a series of pictures of little kids with imaginary friends and publish it in a small picture book. This would be the first of the series if I do. I thought it was a cool idea and I wanted to try and mix some of my characters with Photographs and I thought this would be a fun way to do it. This imaginary friend monster was first drawn up in flash, and then exported into photoshop. I did not do much in photoshop-, just a little blending and highlights. I wanted to keep it vector looking. I had fun with it and it was a good experience so wither or not I end up making it a series I have nothing to lose having done it. I think it turned out pretty fun.

Vectorpark is at it again! if you Enjoyed the "Feed the head" Flash game developed by Vector Park that I posted about some time ago, then you should check out Windosill.

Back at it with tricky puzzles and impressive scripting- this fun little game is a free download until you solve the first 3 rooms or puzzles. Then they ask that you spend 3$ to continue to the full game. I purchased it because I am a big fan of what they do and I love their work. I like to support them, and keep their developments coming. Artist of the month: Francisco Ruiz Velasco

Artist of the month of May is Francisco Ruiz Velasco. I first came across his art work in a comic book shop years ago. I am not a big Comic fan, but I do go looking for inspirational artwork from time to time. His caught my eye. I purchased a Lone Wolf 2100 comic book, and was instantly hooked. The whole thing was eye candy for me- I loved his characters, his style, his backgrounds and details. I love his action frames and the "boring" story frames alike. His ability to tell stories with his art work is awesome. I ended up finding and buying all of the Lone Wolf 2100 comics- and I love them. I then purchased a few of his other comics, and have been following him since. He does a lot of concept design work, science fiction is his specialty. He actually did some work on the newly released Halo Wars, as well as Hellboy2. If you click on the image on the left you will notice near the bottom are the "Tooth Faeries" From Hellboy2. Francisco has also done a bit of film work and has still's from a short film he was working on. I am not sure if it released or if he ever finished it, but I would like to see it. Francisco also did a few Star-Wars comics as well, if you look at the image on the left you will see bobafett that he did. Most of the others are from Lone Wolf 2100. You should check out his stuff if you like what you see here. He has a lot more to look at on his website and blog.

A gift from a Robot: part 3

Its done! Well... at least for now. I could take it even further- clean it up more and detail it better- shade it some more and polish it- but I don't want to right now- I learned so much while making this and estimate it took a good 8 hours! I loved working on it though. I'm ready to archive this piece and move onto something else, and if a need arises I can pull this back-up and re-touch it. Who knows... maybe it could make a cool birthday card? haha - But yeah that was a fun learning experience. I am still not 100% happy with it and there is a lot more to learn- but for a second ever all Photoshop piece- im patting myself on the back...

A gift from a Robot: part 2

So I watched TV for a bit, and came back to the drawing. I thought, "Maybe if I add some color to the robot I will like him more..." which it did. I think the colors are looking sweet and I am learning so much as I go on this. I still do not like is body but this is just for the learning experience anyway. This is as far as I am taking it today~

A gift from a Robot: part 1

I labeled this part 1 because I started a new drawing, and I think I am done for today with it. I decided to continue to try and develop my photoshop skills and sketched out this piece. It is a robot giving a balloon to a little boy. After I sketched it out I started adding detail and shading to render the robot character. After I finished I became a bit annoyed at its crazily out of proportion body. I did a bit of that on purpose to stylize him, but now that is all I can see when I look at it. It looks like he has 2 sets of pecks or something. And then his legs are stubby- I just need to stop looking at it for a little while and maybe attempt to fix those things another day. I am excited however to paint him and detail him further. I feel he is looking pretty good as far as those aspects go... just a little off proportunatly. :)

I have always been fascinated with Character concept art for movies and games. Particularly how realistic they are with the details artists are able to add to bring personalities and histories to the characters. I have also been quite jealous lately of people who do phenomenal artwork in photoshop and / or Painter. I want to learn! I found a quick tutorial for painting in photoshop by a concept artist. I then opened the program and decided to experiment for myself. This is what I came up with. I saved captures of the character in the process to try and follow the tutorials steps, and used them to create this collage.

I obviously have a lot to learn and tons more ground to cover. My clothes stink- and the details are nothing compared to some of these other artists I am motivated by at the moment. I am pretty ecstatic however that I am learning, and I am actually proud of these ugly creatures considering they are my first try at creating and coloring a character all in photoshop.

When I was younger I loved fantasy art, particularly the works of Brian Froud, Ralph Bakshi (Wizards) and from the old Hobbit Cartoon by Rankin/Bass Productions. I would often doodle elfs and wizards and the like... and one of my common characters was this little bashful elf handing a flower to someone. The one pictured above looks nothing like the one I used to draw but thats what inspired this character. The image attached is just a test I wanted to do with some different coloring / drawing styles. The first is obviously a rough sketch that the other two where generated from.

-A collaboration between my buddy Jer and I for our newly founded "Chewy Tomato Studio" - We will be making and selling posters of this within a month or two- let me know if you are interested.

We basically played hot potato with a flash file to do this, sending it back and forth. I did all the coloring and touched it all up at the end- Jer added an extra spontinuity that I could not have done on my own, his mind is so random and he draws some pretty creative off-the-wall things!

Time for bed- here is an update- and the answer to the question in the previous post- In the cartoon I am making there is a scene where the storm trooper gets chased by one of these big ugly dudes from the Ewok movie- I think he is looking pretty cool so far-

The goal is to enter it in this comp. http://www.atom.com/spotlights/starwars/challenge/index.html -if you look at the animation winner for 2008 - the animation is pretty weak. I feel pretty confident I have a good chance at getting this in at least a runner up standing.

I am also thinking of making this into a "cartoon series" and presenting it to Aniboom to be sponsored by their site. (Details on their sponsor program found at http://www.aniboom.com/studio/create) I am not sure what the rules/regulations are for using "Star-Wars" Characters.

Other than that there are several smaller animation competitions out there- such as "The greatest story never told" (www.tgsnt.com) and others that I would like to submit this to and see if I cant get some exposure. Well ill update with new pictures as I get further- and try not to give away the whole story.

Artist of the Month: Joe Ledbetter

I love Joe Ledbetter's style! Hard thick his outlines. Strongly stylized characters. His pieces are easily distinguished... I first saw his art in toy-form from the Kid-Robot site. I then found his site and started noticing his stuff around. His prints are awesome- I don't know how he paints with acrylic on board and makes it look so clean and crisp. I Cannot even see brush strokes on most of his paintings. His attention to detail and crisp lines inspires me. I love his bright colors and shading. Really amazing and smooth work. At first glance his characters and animals seam cute and cuddly, but then have a morbid scary side to them. Here is his site- you should check him and his art out.

so another couple of hours today- and I finally finished up a painting. The black lines alone took me 2 hours... crazy. Im pretty happy with how it turned out though- I think this is my favorite one yet. Here are a couple of images of the process and final painting.
Im pretty happy with myself that I have been painting as much as I have been. So much more productive than the x-box :) haha - This one is off to be gifted tomorrow- great practice- pretty soon Im gonna stop giving them away and start saving them up to potentially enter them to a gallery or throw a show. I love it when Saturday rolls around and my wife doesn't have the day all planned out :) We did some shopping- I got some new shoes for 9 bucks...
Theres a picture of them for the heck of it. So after the shopping- I dedicated a good 3 hours to painting. I had one I started yesterday that I was working on, as well as I new one I started. I would switch them off while paint was drying between the two. Then a little later on I had an Idea for that door I was spray painting- practicing with. Originally I was just doing it to mess around and get a feel for spray-paint- and I hated it... but then I got an idea for it, so I took it back out and did some more work on that too. Here are some pictures- some may not look like much- a lot of base work- but you may be able to guess what they are- haha considering im on a bird craze lately.

The painting I started yesterday. This is on a piece of wood... about 4 inches x 14 inches.... total guess...
The new one I started today- doesn't look like much- but this is on an 8 x 10 canvas board.
And here is that door again with a little bit more done. Working out my idea I sketched out- hopefully it turns out :) trying to stick with spray-paint still as much as I can-

Small Bird

So after finishing the door- I re-fell in love with my big round bird with the skinny legs character. I think I wanna paint several of them- maybe do a few different versions. Some with hats- Afros- Sneakers- stuff like that. I think its pretty sweet- and relatively easy for me to paint- to get into painting again. I would love to throw a show some day- and sell some of my paintings. I wouldn't ask much for them- just to cover costs and all- but to start to get some exposure. I love art... painting... and my characters. Ive put them on the dusty shelf for too long. Anyways... here is the little bird I painted. (I'm gonna give it away as a gift to a good friend, and prolly my number 1 fan besides my wife :) -Amber Taniuchi )

So I started this painting last year... Dunno why I did not finish it. It is on a door- so it is pretty big. I think I got discouraged because it was not exactly how I wanted it, but for a first painting in years (Since before I started it...) Its pretty good. So I picked it up and finished it. I then hung it on the wall in my "X-Box Room" for now- but hopefully we move soon and Ill find something better for it.

I do wanna add something to it- I want to get a separate piece of wood- and cut out a thought bubble- and have the worm in the mama birds mouth thinking something.... "Im Doomed!" -but I will need to get that wood custom cut for it - so ill leave that for later. But anyways Im glad I finally touched this up and finished the birds at least. here it is (If you look back to the posts from October last year you will see when I started this)

It could just be me... but the more I see videos and pictures of Sam Flores, the more I get the impression that he looks a lot like Dali... call me crazy :) you decide- (minus the wrinkles and crazy mustache of course.... although Sam could prolly pull that mustache off well! haha but I totally see Sam as like a young Dali-)

About time I add another post. Ive decided to do a "Artist of the month" post and write a bit and spotlight an artist that I have enjoyed following this month. I previously talked about Phunk Studios- they still blow me away with their stuff- but this month I have been very inspired and impressed with Sam Flores' work. I love his paintings and vector style- It is something I would like to emulate. I feel we have a similar style- although he is much more developed and experienced than I! I have not been doing as much as Id like to lately... (nobodies fault but my own)

Sam Flores has a sweet style- and is very unique. I love his Asian Influence in a lot of his stuff. If you are interested you should take a peak at his site- you will be inspired. http://www.samflores.com

He has quite a few paintings he has done on his site. I have the feeling that his site is in need of an update though- because it hasn't changed in months! We all know how hectic life gets- I haven't updated my own portfolio site (www.marcushadlock.com) in over a year.... Its about that time.

Sam Flores' Characters have big heads, small bodies, and huge hands. Its a interesting look and I think it works well for him. Id like to one day buy a painting of his- Maybe if we get into a bigger house with more wall space! :)

This is kinda a sloppy review, spotlight, what have you... gimme a break its late and I haven't written for a while haha. But for what its worth- Sam Flores- I love your work and your style! Check him out-

Haha I am getting out of practice with my design skills- I need to keep it up. Here is a little playing around- with a goofy picture of me from the fish-eye cam. Instead of just putting my art up, I have decided to start posting images from my favorite designers, and things I come across that inspire me and motivate me to do more. I have always been a huge fan of PhunkStudio - ever since they had an article in the ComputerArts magazine. I fell in love with their art from the cover of the mag, and read the article through. Those 4 guys are awesome- and are crazy creative. Here is something of theirs-

I was reading through a Computer-Arts magazine and wanted to try something different. I am a big fan of the Artist/Designer "Peskimo" www.peskimo.com and kind of tried to do something similar to his style... this is what I came up with. I had to do a ninja for one of em ;) I guess for it to truly be "Peskimo Style" It needs the black outlines taken off- but I like them better on-

Character Creator Game

So I took what I did in the last post and made it into an all-out game. I had some down time over the Christmas break up at the in-laws so I built onto it and gave it some more structure and features. Its still not done- but its kinda fun to play with. My goal is to have an export feature to enable users to take export a jpg of their character upon completion. then if they want- they can use that as their buddy-icons for aim or msn messenger, etc. well here is the work in progress- enjoy

(Also for Christmas a got a lot more art supplies- paint and brushes- which is what was holding me back from working on that bird-door painting. Now I plan on re-visiting that project real soon ;) )

Ive seen a couple artists that have inspired me with their style- enough to attempt it at least ;) Their characters look clean and crisp- almost like fisher-price "little people" or "Bob the Builder" sort of looking. I think it came out pretty good- next step is to add a little life to the characters- and animate them a bit ;)

A little more practice with animation in Flash

Ive decided to have fun with this guy and this style of animation and add a new screen with a new obstacle every so often. I think it is good practice, and its fun ;) Ill prob. end up re-posting it every month with the updates.

UPDATE 12.10 -Ok- I made it 22 rooms ( my favorite number ) and now I am done with it- Its long enough and ive learned all I can from that character- Maybe if your bored enough one day you can watch all 22 rooms. I posted it up on Newgrounds as well for fun-

Paint cans

I drew a paint can from a photo of a paint can in Flash. Then I started fooling around with some compositions... Here is what I came up with. I know the reflections are a bit skrewy but I need to stop playing with them and go to bed! I did them quick cuz I thought they would look cool, but they are just pissing me off cuz they are so off! maybe ill fix them tomorrow- its 2:30 am and I need to get up early tomorrow....

just getting a feel for this wacom tablet- I have been looking into some of the crazy stuff people do with them- mostly in photoshop. I would love to learn - I tried using a wacom before and never got into it. After playing with it tonight I am liking it- these doodles are goofy mostly- just drawing in flash. I have been playing with Photoshop as well with it- pretty cool tool ;)

I did a photoshop tutorial from the computer arts magazine and figured Id post it up. Keep in mind most of it was step by step so even though It turned out Bad-A I cant take credit for it. Of course I didn't do exactly the same steps and put things in the exact same spots- but still a tutorial is a tutorial, and it was an awesome learning experience. Ill have to try one out on my own now- The image on the left is the before- image on the right is the after-
